The Best Oils and Fats

Oils ain’t oils
All fats are not equal. There good fats and bad fats. End of story.
Refined vs Unrefined
Consumption of excess fat is a recent phenomenon.
Historically diets were low in fat as fat was hard to find in large quantities.
Aboriginal people who led nomadic lives had only a few whole sources of fat in their diet and they were immune to the diseases of the western world.
Since Aboriginal people were introduced to western diets (consisting of processed and refined foods), diabetes and coronary heart disease plagues them and their life expectancy is much lower than the non–Indigenous population.

Reflections….
In my cultural community (Island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea) the older woman still love to bake home made bread.
I remember that they would often discreetly compare each others bread to see whose bread was the whitest (obviously from using the most bleached and refined flour). I always found that a strange phenomena.
In my teens, when I was venturing into good eating habits for nutrition and health, I would try to educate my mum’s generation of women on the advantages of whole foods.
Though they feared changing their ways. When I developed a deeper understanding of the women’s experiences of life growing up in a village, I understood that during the war it was easier for them to obtain wholegrain flours than refined processed flours. As only the wealthy and privileged could afford refined flour, a product of the industrial revolution.
The result was the families that couldn’t afford overly processed refined flour associated themselves with a ‘poor’ status.
The irony is that the people that had the ‘poorer’ status were ‘rich’ as they ate healthy unprocessed foods straight out of their gardens. Whole foods. Yet psychologically they felt deprived.
I guess not a lot has changed when you compare some habits in western civilization today.
Advertisements draw people to buy expensive refined food products with little regard to the health implications of consuming that food.
A deprivation psyche develops. Though the irony is they are not missing out at all, only adding toxins to their body that potentially impacts on their health.
This is where where the saying ‘Health is Wealth” applies very nicely. If someone who had a lot of wealth but bad health would trade their wealth for good health any day. Go for health in body, mind and spirit and wealth will always follow.
Keep it whole
There are 50 essential nutrients that our body needs to be healthy and function optimally.
It is important to have a well balanced diet eating whole foods that includes fruit and vegetables, raw soaked nuts, coconuts and organic unrefined oils in their unaltered state and the elimination of processed foods.
Eating food in its freshest raw whole-food state and consuming the right fats maximizes the amount of nutrients and provides you with vitality, energy and a zest for life.
I believe anyone can change their thinking towards a healthier eating path.
Keep it simple and feel great. There is no need for fancy or any processed foods.
I offer a variety of fresh raw live foods for my guests; fresh green juice, coconut juice, almond milk with coconut, a healthy salad with delicious raw live dressing or seasonal organic fruits, oranges, apples, strawberries, peaches, locally grown macadamia nuts or home made carob treats.
They always come back for more!!

Coriander Orange Salad
Filed under: Raw fruit and vegetable diet | Tags: | September 23rd, 2011

Orange Coriander Salad
My mum regularly made this refreshing salad growing up. We were fortunate to pick the fresh oranges off the trees or get some fresh ones from the neighbors and add the fresh garden herbs to it.
It is a healthy winter salad to add to your list of raw food recipes, particularly as navel oranges and coriander are abundant in winter. However you can also make the salad with later seasoned Valencia oranges when Navel oranges are out of season. Try it with different oranges as well like Hamlin’s, Blood oranges or even other citrus fruits like the Tangelo.
Oranges contain vitamin A & C, beta-carotene, calcium, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, thiamine, phosphorous, vitamin B6 and others. Coriander has been used in folk medicine for various ailments and contains antioxidants and antibacterial properties. Oranges and coriander make a great combination. Here’s the recipe……

Best and worst sugars to consume

Best and worst sugars
White and refined sugars
Refined white sugar is definitely on the worse sugar to consume list. It is a slow poison on the human body as it is overly processed just like other synthetic sweeteners like aspartame.
Humans were not meant to eat refined white sugar. This is the same or even worse for artificial sweeteners like saccharin, aspartame, as found in Nutra Sweet and other artificial sweeteners. White sugar spurs the growth of unhealthy bacteria and yeasts which can infest the body can cause terrible consequences to your health such as fungal conditions, hypoglycemic/hypoglycemic and diabetic conditions, heart disease, obesity, early aging, and metabolic syndrome. There are better alternatives to refined sugars to safeguard your health. Read the rest of this entry »

Raw Pumpkin Soup with Fennel

[Raw Pumpkin Soup with Fennel]
Soup is a great food especially if your trying to lose weight or on a cleansing diet as it has already been broken down through the food processor. It is also easy to digest as well as very filling. It is great to eat soup between meals for a filler.
Pumpkin is low in calories and rich in important anti-oxidants containing vitamins A C and E. It has many natural poly-phenolic flavonoid compounds like alpha and beta carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin. It is rich in the the B complex vitamins and includes the minerals copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus.
This raw pumpkin soup tastes divine, much much tastier than the cooked version. The organic pumpkin I used was a local grown by Kurrawong organic farmers in Nashdale in NSW. God bless the organic farmers who work hard to deliver us great tasting wholesome nutrient rich food. To get the best nutrients out of pumpkin try it raw. I ‘ve created this delicious raw pumpkin soup with fennel to give it a hint of aniseed flavor…yum! Read the rest of this entry »
